Filed Under US Government, News, Military, World News | Leave a Comment
President Bush has signed a bill for $162 BILLION for funding the “wars” in Iraq and Afghanistan. In case you’re not keeping track, that means we’re spending $650 BILLION in Iraq, and almost $200 BILLION in Afghanistan. $850 BILLION dollars, divided by the approximately 305,000,000 people in the U.S., comes to: $2,786.89 for every man, woman, and child in the US.

Fuel Costs For War Effort To Soar
Filed Under News, Military, World News | Leave a Comment
According to The Huffington Post, it’s not just we Americans paying more for gas. (Well, you Americans, I don’t own a car.) It seems that the military will be paying more, A LOT more for oil. There’s talk of making the Iraqis pay for some of it, what with all the oil they have and seeing as how we’re rebuilding their country with our money, but since we can’t actually keep their pipelines from being blown up every other day (where’s Iron Man when you need him?), that may not happen any time soon.

Judge Allows KBR Rape Case To Go To Trial
Filed Under US Government, News, Military | Leave a Comment
Jamie Leigh Jones, a contractor for KBR (which was then part of Halliburton) was drugged and sexually assaulted in Iraq last year, and forced to spend a day in a cargo container so that she wouldn’t report her attack. Her employers insist that as part of her agreement with them, any such issues should go to arbitration for a third party to decide; thankfully, a judge has seen fit to let the rape case go to trial.

US Prepares Readiness For War Against Iran
Filed Under US Government, News, Military | 1 Comment
While it may not be an immediate prelude to an actual fight, it seems that the US is drawing up plans on how to go to war with Iran. As if spending 12 BILLION dollars a week in Afghanistan and Iraq weren’t enough, they are now making contingency plans for attacking yet another country that’s never attacked us. There is speculation that General Petraeus’s promotion may be because he favours the hard-line, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs isn’t helping matters.

US Military Frees Innocent Pulitzer-Prize Winning Photographer After Two Years

In Baghdad today, the US military released AP photographer Bilal Hussein after holding him for more than two years without filing formal charges. The US military apparently no longer considers him a threat! “Hussein was a member of the AP team that won a Pulitzer Prize for photography in 2005, and his detention drew protests from rights groups and press freedom advocates.”

If you’ve ever watched the HBO Miniseries “Band Of Brothers“, you’ll recall that in the eighth episode “The Last Patrol” that after the first of two patrols, the men of Easy Company rightfully did not carry out the second patrol so close to the end of the war. It seems that many of the men and women stationed in Iraq are doing much the same thing… Read more

As if it would be any surprise, the Congressional Budget Office is publishing their revised estimates of the Iraq and Afghanistan war costs, and they’re estimating that it could cost $2.4 TRILLION dollars through 2017. As there are 300,000,000 people in the US, that’s about $8,000 per man woman and child. (The article also reminds us Read more

Bush Wants US Iraq Presence To Be Like US S. Korean Presence
Filed Under US Government, News, Military | Leave a Comment
Apparently, President Bush wants to keep American troops in Iraq for quite some time. He would have them play the same role in Iraq (as a supporting security force) that the US soldiers currently play in South Korea. It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t understand that the very thing that got us attacked in the first place was our presence (soldiers and bases) in the Middle East (particularly Saudi Arabia), and now he wants to add to that, further fueling the anger of our enemies. While we’re at it, we should bring our troops home from South Korea as well!

Military Wanted To Provoke War With Cuba

It’s not that we’re all crazy in assuming that the government (and particularly the military) would target its own people in an attempt to sway public opinion against an enemy; there were once plans to do just that. Granted, these were Joint Chiefs documents that were rejected by civilian authority at the time, but it’s not so far-fetched to think that the government might actually plan something (or at least allow a planned attack) to sway public opinion.
