If you’ve ever watched the HBO Miniseries “Band Of Brothers“, you’ll recall that in the eighth episode “The Last Patrol” that after the first of two patrols, the men of Easy Company rightfully did not carry out the second patrol so close to the end of the war. It seems that many of the men and women stationed in Iraq are doing much the same thing… and going on what are known as “Search and Avoid” missions. Without the proper armor for their Humvees, and after having seen so many of their compatriots blown up by roadside bombs, they are taking their vehicles to abandoned places, parking, and sending in radio reports that they’re running their patrols. While I’m ordinarily against anyone shirking their duties, there can often be legitimate reasons for doing so; ill-equipped vehicles in one of the most dangerous places on earth definitely qualifies. When will out government get its act together? If they’re not going to bring the troops home (which should be priority one), at least give them the right equipment!
